Prosur is launched as an alternative to Unasur

The presidents of Colombia, Chile, Argentina and others countries signed in Santiago the approval of the initiative, which excludes Venezuela

As a joint move, the presidents of Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and Paraguay launched the Prosur initiative in Santiago, a regional block that aims to replace Unasur.

This initiative was signed and endorsed by the seven leaders who were present at the summit, plus one from Guyana. The only ones that abstained from approving it were Uruguay and Bolivia.

“It has been a good day for collaboration, dialogue, understanding and integration in South America, because for more than five years the presidents of South America had not had the opportunity to meet,” said the president of Chile Sebastian Piñera.

This space will serve as “a place of meeting and dialogue” for the Latin American nations. The aim is also to leave ideologies aside, according to the Chilean president.

The new space will have “a flexible, lightweight, inexpensive structure, with clear operating rules and an agile decision-making mechanism that allows South America to advance in concrete understandings and integration programs,” reads the statement signed by the leaders.

Venezuela was excluded from this initiative because of having a government not recognized by a large part of Prosur’s members.
