US retail sales grew up during May

This figure improved by 17.7% on the month of April, thus presenting one of the best increases since 1992

Retail trade in the United States reached an aggregate amount of $ 485,545 million last May, which represents an increase of 17.7% over the previous month. It is the largest increase since the start of this statistical series in 1992, as a consequence of the large decrease observed during the month of April due to the restrictions applied to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, compared to the same month last year, US retail sales contracted 6.1%, according to data released Tuesday by the US Census and the Commerce Department.

Likewise, the figures corresponding to March were revised, improving their slowdown to a decrease of 14.7%, compared to the 16.4% that had been initially announced.

The largest increase recorded was for clothing stores, whose sales increased by 188%, while furniture sales increased by 89.7% and vehicle and component sales closed the fifth month of the year with an increase of 44.1%. Household consumption represents more than two thirds of the economic activity of the United States.
