Unemployment in Brazil reached 14.4 %
The information presented by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) shows an increase of 2.6 points compared to the same period of 2019
Brazil’s unemployment rate stood at 14.4 % between June and August of this year, an increase of 2.6 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year, which is the highest record in the series history started in 2012, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
Unemployment figure from the South American country reveal that up to 4.3 million people left the country’s employed population compared to the previous quarter, while the number of unemployed people increased by more than 1.1 million people compared to the previous quarter, with a total of 13.8 million unemployed people at the end of August.
The data corresponding to the occupancy level was also the lowest in the series, with 46.8 % representing a contraction of 7.9 percentage points with respect to the same quarter of 2019.
For its part, informality, which represents those people who work without social coverage, represented 38 % of Brazilian workers, with 31 million people. This data represents an increase of 0.4 percentage points compared to the previous quarter and a decrease of 3.4 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
In relation to the same quarter of 2019, no branch of activity recorded an increase in employment, with significant falls in construction (-19 %), hotels and restaurants (-31.4 %) and domestic work (-27 ,5 %). The Public Administration was the single sector to show stability compared to the previous year.
For its part, the number of employees in the public sector stood at 11.9 million people between June and August, 2.8 % less compared to the previous quarter and at the same level as in the same period in 2019.
