Twitter announces vulnerability that affected 4% of users

The social network assures that several computers were exposed to attacks from cybercriminals, who could have installed malware and malicious apps

Twitter admitted a vulnerability on its Android mobile application that compromised the security of 4% of its users, who were exposed to attackers that could gain access to personal information from their accounts such as their direct messages.

The security flaw affected users of the versions of Twitter for Android 8 (Oreo) and 9 (Pie), although the US company has no evidence that it has been exploited by cybercriminals, as indicated in a statement.

Through this breach, the affected users were exposed to the installation of malicious applications on their device, which could access their personal data and direct messages, thus avoiding the permission system established by Android.

A 96% of Twitter for Android users had security patches in place to protect against vulnerability, according to the company.

For the remaining 4% affected, Twitter updated its Android application to ensure that external ‘apps’ cannot access user data, and also recommended that users update the application
