Former US President Donald Trump has claimed he is being politically persecuted after pleading not guilty in a Washington court to four counts in the case led by prosecutor Jack Smith against him for trying to rig the 2020 election.

“This is a persecution of a political opponent, it was never supposed to have happened in the United States,” he told reporters at the Ronald Reagan airport before boarding a plane back to his luxury resort in Bedminster, New Jersey. .

The tycoon, who is the third time he has been prosecuted, also highlighted his advantage over the other Republican rivals for the primaries. “If you can’t beat him (your opponent), you chase him or prosecute him,” he added.

In his brief appearance before the media, the former US president also added that he has felt sad seeing the dirt, the decay, as well as the graffiti-covered walls and broken buildings in Washington.

Trump was arrested, as established by protocol, upon his arrival at the Barrett Prettyman court and his fingerprints have been taken. Later, he entered the room with two of his attorneys, John Lauro and Todd Blanche.
