The United States experiences a wave of bomb threats in exchange for Bitcoin

Retail businesses have received threats from hackers who ask for payments in Bitcoin in exchange for not exploding bombs in these establishments

In the United States, some retailers, such as Kroger KR.N, Walmart WMT and Whole Foods Market, have denounced bomb threats from cybercriminals, who demand payments in Bitcoin and giftcards in order not to carry out their plans.

The police are investigating this wave of recent threats to retail businesses, involving the payment of bribery or blackmail in Bitcoin, the main cryptocurrency on the market.

According to information published by the Wall Street Journal, businessmen have been the target of these threats in recent months. Chains like Kroger KR.N, Walmart WMT.N and Amazon’s Whole Foods Market AMZN.O, among others, are some of the victims.

The attackers threaten to detonate explosives in their stores if they do not receive the requested payment in bitcoin, giftcards or fiat money. The case stretches “from New Mexico to Wisconsin.”

The suspicious calls to the employees of these stores have not stopped requesting the transfer of money under threat of exploding a bomb if they do not proceed to their demands.

“The FBI said it is working with state and local law enforcement and asking members of the public to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity,” the newspaper quoted.
