Symantec publishes annual cybersecurity report

Brazil leads the list of countries in Latin America with the most attacks and in the world context the top of the ranking is occupied by the United States

The security of the digital ecosystem is exposed to various attacks by viruses, theft of data and assets. The company specialized in cybersecurity Symantec issued the ISTR 24 report (Internet Security Threat Report) that shows the threats to countries in Latin America and the world in general – to add 157 countries – for ransomware, phishing, cryptojacking, malware, hacking and other modalities of crimes.

Brazil tops the list in Latin America with a global detection rate for 2018 of 4.11%. In second and third place are Mexico and Venezuela, with 3.39% and 1.33% respectively. Argentina ranks fourth and Chile fifth.

For the annual report, Symantec took into account eight metrics to establish the main sources of threats: malware, spam, phishing hosts, bots, network attacks, web attacks, ransomware and cryptojacking.

In Latin American, ransomware is the main modality used by cybercriminals to “block devices and demand a ransom in exchange for recovering access”. In the business sector it is estimated that ransomware increased by 12%.

In the global context, the first in the list of attacks is the United States, with 21.53% of attacks, followed by China with 8.98% and India, with 7.98%.

A new form of attack is the formjacking, which consists of subtracting consumer data from the infected servers. This attack grew exponentially in 2018, generating high incomes for criminals. Analysts estimate that during this year the formjacking could continue to increase in different contexts, causing damage particularly to the online retail sector.
