Spain will contribute with € 11,950 million to the EU budget

The Iberian region increased this figure by 17.5% when compared to that planned for the 2014-2020 period

Spain will pay an average of 11,950 million euros a year to the budget of the European Union for the period between 2021 and 2027, a figure that is 17.5% higher than the one paid between 2014-2020, according to calculations published on Tuesday by the European Commission.

The Spanish contribution, in addition, will increase annually from the 10,860 million that Brussels estimates in the year 2020 (last of the current budget) to the 12,380 million that it will pay in 2027.

These are still provisional figures because they depend on the final agreement on the MFF among the Twenty-eight, but if confirmed it would mean that the Iberian region would continue to be a net beneficiary during the next EU budget.

Brussels, however, chose not to disclose specific calculations that clarify whether each country will be a net beneficiary or taxpayer arguing “technical limitations.” He also argued that talking about net balances does not represent the indirect benefits of European programs and ignores the economic benefits of being within the single market.

However, Spain will be the fourth country that will pay the most to the community budget, behind Germany with 32,760 million annually, France with 22,450 million and Italy with 15,270 million.

In this way, the Iberian region will contribute to the EU budget an annual amount equivalent to 0.95% of the Gross National Income (GNI), a percentage higher than the average of the current period in which an MFP is allocated a 0, 86% of the GNI.
