Sony maintains PS5 release date

The company assured that, despite the current scenario, the new PlayStation console will arrive by December this year

Sony is preparing for the launch of its next generation of PlayStation 5 (PS5) consoles, and the company plans to manufacture a limited initial number of units, although it will maintain the launch date for Christmas this year.

In this way, Sony plans to manufacture between 5 and 6 million units of the new platform until March 2021, the end of the company’s fiscal year, which represents a reduction compared to the 7.5 million units that its predecessor sold, the PS4, in the first two quarters after its launch in 2013, as reported by internal sources from Bloomberg.

This limited launch responds to the fact that Sony expects the PS5’s most advanced technical specifications lead to a launch with a starting price of between $ 499 and $ 549, which will affect demand, according to sources in the cited medium.

However, the Japanese company maintains the arrival date of the new console for Christmas 2020, without COVID-19 impact in terms of production capacity but only in terms of promotional plans. The pandemic could still change the final number of units sold, but analysts see its delay as “unlikely.”

Sony’s strategy will focus on betting on the PS4 with initiatives such as price cuts while the PS5 units are still limited, in order to also increase the number of subscribers to its PlayStation Plus services and the streaming of PlayStation Now.
