Sánchez addresses the food crisis with the Iberoamerican secretary general

Pedro Sánchez met with the Ibero-American secretary general, Andrés Allamand to address different issues, including the food crisis due to the war in Ukraine

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, met with Andrés Allamand, the head of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB in Spanish) to discuss the various problems resulting from the war between Russia and Ukraine, particularly the food crisis.

The causes stress at the global economy due to the high prices of raw materials and energy products, in addition to deepening the food crisis in many vulnerable countries, especially those on the African continent.

As you may recall, Russia has blocked most exports from Ukraine, considered one of the main suppliers of grain in the world. Additionally, the shortage of fertilizers aggravates food production worldwide.

Another issue discussed at the meeting between Sánchez and Allamand was the ecological transition as a way to combat the effects of climate change, which “seriously” affects the countries of the region, according to the Executive.

On the other hand, the president has conveyed to Allamand the “constructive and unquestionable” support of Spain in his new stage at the head of the Ibero-American General Secretariat and the Government’s commitment to the next Ibero-American Summit.

Focus on digital rights

The meeting held in Moncloa also included the Spanish President’s proposal on the preparation of the Ibero-American charter of digital rights, agreeing that the issue would be worked on during the summit to be held in March 2023 in the Dominican Republic with the motto ‘Together towards a fair and sustainable Ibero-America’.

As will be remembered, President Sánchez proposed in 2021 to discuss within the Ibero-American world community the signing of a Charter of Digital Rights for the region. “Given what is happening in the digital world, according to Sánchez, and what affects rights and freedoms, it is necessary to consider that objective.”
