Sam Altman will return to OpenAI
The OpenAI company will rehire the founder after having fired him and joining the ranks of Microsoft
In a surprising turn, OpenAI reversed its decision to fire its co-founder, Sam Altman, who was recently hired by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to lead a research team in advanced artificial intelligence.
On November 22, OpenAI announced a new deal to bring Altman back as CEO. The company confirmed the news through a statement on its official X account (formerly Twitter).
“We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO,” the company stated, detailing that the new initial board will be composed of Bret Taylor as president, Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo. They added that they are working on the details of the agreement and thanked them for their patience during this process.
Altman, expressing his love for OpenAI, had decided to retire from his new role at Microsoft to return to the company he co-founded. “I love OpenAI, and everything I’ve done in recent days has been to keep this team and its mission together,” shared Altman, who also highlighted his desire to take advantage of the strong partnership with Microsoft.
Satya Nadella supported Altman and OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman’s decision to return to the organization. Nadella stressed the importance of ensuring that OpenAI continues to thrive and advance its mission in the field of artificial intelligence.
