Redcar Council suffered a ransomware attack

According to the source, the cybercrime has rendered the Council's software and servers inactive

The Redcar and Cleveland Council confirmed they were victim of a cyber attack after a ransomware entered the server network by hijacking the private tax information of its citizens.

The same incident happened three weeks ago, where according to reports, hackers accessed the Council’s servers by encrypting the files of the equipment and requesting a reward to release them.

Despite the eventd, the agencies had not issued any type of statements of being again victims of cybercrime, admitting that the attack has rendered the software and servers of the Council inactive.

However, the agency ensures that the data has been progressively restored and is operating on a new website from new servers. “All frontline services continue working, payments continue to be processed normally and so far there is no evidence to suggest that personal information has been removed from our servers,” said Mary Lanigan, Council leader.

Lanigan also reported: “It may take some time before our IT capabilities are fully restored, which can mean frustration for the public when dealing with us administratively.”
