Pedro Sánchez calls early elections for July 23

The president of the government of Spain has made the least expected decision and announced the advancement of the general elections for July 23

This Sunday, Spain held the municipal and regional elections. After knowing the results, unfavorable for Pedro Sánchez and the PSOE, the president of the Spanish government announced the early elections for next July 23.

Pedro Sánchez’s party lost several autonomous communities in the recent municipal elections. As a measure that allows him to regain power, the president spoke with King Felipe VI to publicize the decision to call early general elections.

According to the dpa news agency: “In an institutional statement without questions in Moncloa, Sánchez has reported that he has spoken with King Felipe VI to inform him of the call for an extraordinary Council of Ministers and the dissolution of the Parliament. “I assume the results”, said the President of the Government, who has chosen to submit the “democratic mandate to the popular will.”

With this quick and risky movement, Sánchez puts the voters in a position to quickly choose whether to leave the way clear for VOX and PP, who were favored this Sunday, or mobilize to prevent them from advancing.
