Mexico’s economy grows 12.1%

Thanks to the return of certain activities to normality, after the stoppage due to the pandemic, the Mexican GDP begins to recover

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Mexico rebounded 12.1 % in the third quarter of the year compared to the previous quarter, after the gradual return of Aztec economic activity in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The data improves by one tenth the projection made a few weeks ago by the agency, which pointed to a growth of 12 % between July and September.

The rebound in the Aztec economy was due to the recovery in the different sectors of activity. Thus, the primary sector grew by 8 %, while the industry rebounded by 21.7 % and the services sector increased by 8.8 %.

However, the data also reveal the profound economic consequences for the North American country. Thus, the Aztec GDP contracted by 8.6 % during the third quarter when compared to the same quarter of 2019. This fall joins that of the previous quarter, when the Mexican economy fell by 18.9 % in the interannual rate, its worst data ever recorded.

By activities, the primary sector was the only one that showed a positive performance after growing by 7.4 %. Meanwhile, secondary activities sector contracted 8.8 %, while tertiary activities fell 8.9 %.
