Mexico announces restriction on cell phone use in elementary and middle schools

Starting November 3, the ban on the use of cell phones and tablets in classes will take effect in Mexico. It applies to elementary and middle schools throughout the country.

According to authorities, the use of these devices will be authorized only in cases of emergencies or educational activities planned by the educational institutions.

The measure, proposed by the teachers’ union, seeks to combat the indiscriminate use of social media in favor of the psychological well-being of minors.

The decision, supported by Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, comes amid an international debate about the impact of “overexposure to technology on academic performance and children’s psychological well-being.”

In Mexico, the country has over 34 million students in its general education system, where the teachers’ decision will “curb the massive consumption of social media and hyperconnectivity within school premises.” Furthermore, it aims to “reestablish traditional methods of social interaction, promote psychomotor skills, and refocus on human interaction without the mediation of screens.”
