The President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, made an important request during the UN General Assembly: the reincorporation of Venezuela into the Southern Common Market, Mercosur.
The South American nation became a full member of the organization in 2012, but was indefinitely suspended by Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay following the application of the Ushuaia Protocol.
The Paraguayan president’s request coincides with the participation in the United Nations General Assembly of Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, with the express authorization of US President Donald Trump.
This is also the result of prior agreements between Rodríguez and Peña, “who agreed to move forward with reactivating institutional channels and the gradual restoration of bilateral relations.”
