Liverpool wins legal battle over sponsorship agreement

The legal victory implies that the London Premier League club will now be able to wear Nike shitrs

Liverpool won a legal battle over a multi-million-dollar sponsorship deal with New Balance t-shirt suppliers, paving the way to sign an agreement with a new supplier, British media reported Friday.

New Balance took Liverpool to court after it was alleged that the current European champion was looking to change to a new agreement with his Nike rivals once its current contract, worth 40 million pounds per season, ends in May 2020.

Boston-based New Balance has been Liverpool’s official shirt supplier since the 2015/16 campaign and believes they should have been allowed to match Nike’s offer.

However, the club successfully argued that New Balance could not match Nike’s offer with respect to marketing and distribution, and the judge ruled that the New Balance offer was “less favorable for Liverpool.”

“Liverpool FC is satisfied with the judge’s decision to rule in favor of the club after the legal dispute with our current kit supplier, New Balance,” said the English club. “We will continue with New Balance during the current season, in combination with the preparation of Liverpool’s shirts next season with our new supplier,” he added.

New Balance said they were “disappointed” with the result, since they believed they could match the competition’s offer. “We are disappointed that we cannot continue our successful sponsorship of Liverpool Football Club,” a New Balance spokeswoman said via email.
