Uber says new flying taxi will start operations in 2023

Uber showed the final design of its latest innovation and also confirmed that it will begin operations with the help of NASA

The American company Uber made public the final design of its flying taxi which is scheduled to begin operations in 2023. Juan Galiardo, director of the company in Spain, confirmed that its new “flying cars” will be available to users not as a test or using prototypes but as the final fully operational version.

This project, also known as Uber Elevate, was officially presented a year ago and aims to offer an efficient way of transport to prevent collapse in the road arteries of large cities.

Uber Elevate feature

This air vehicle will be distinguished by being a VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) device developed by Bell Helicopters, Embraer and Pipistrel, and will fly at a height between 300 and 600 meters using exclusively electric power. It will have a speed of up to 240 km / h with an autonomy of almost 100 km and is scheduled to be released in the sky of Los Angeles and Dallas.

In addition to this, Uber said they are asking for the collaboration of NASA to help them implement an air traffic management system in order to organize all their aircraft and routes below 10,000 feet, because in case it exceeds that altitude it would enter the exclusive area for commercial airplanes.

Uber also plans to create its own “helipads” or stations, which would be exclusive to its flying taxis and would be available through the same mobile application. According to Uber, its price would be $ 5,000 per mile (1.6 km) at the launching of the service; however, the goal is that over time that rate is reduced to $ 0.44 per mile and passenger.
