Hertz acquires 100,000 Tesla to strengthen its fleet of electric vehicles

The car rental company invested heavily to build one of the largest zero-emission car rental fleets in North America

The multinational Hertz is convinced that electric vehicles will prevail in the field of mobility. The company is preparing to become the largest supplier of electric rental cars in the US market and in the rest of the world.

The company designed a strategy based on three aspects that will allow it to gain a foothold in the market and achieve its objective. The first includes the vehicles themselves and the recharging infrastructure, for which it made a purchase of 100,000 units of Tesla models, which will be gradually incorporated until the end of next year.

With this acquisition, the company will have 20 % of its global fleet of electric vehicles and as of November 1st this year users will be able to rent a Tesla Model 3 at the different Hertz agencies located in airports and cities in the United States, and some of Europe.

The second aspect of the strategy is related to the deployment of a charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in its network of offices. “A combination of fast charging level 2 and DC in approximately 65 markets by the end of 2022 and in more than a hundred by the end of 2023.” The customers who choose to rent a Tesla will have the option of accessing “3,000 supercharger stations of the Californian manufacturer in the United States and Europe.”

The third aspect is related to a differentiated and premium promotional campaign that includes “a digitized guide to educate customers about the electric vehicle” and the incorporation of a reservation process through the company’s mobile application.

WorldGlobal interest

According to Mark Fields, Hertz interim CEO, interest in electric vehicles is increasing globally and demand will start to rise around the world. He says: “The new Hertz is going to lead the way as a mobility company, starting with the largest electric vehicle rental fleet in North America and a commitment to growing our fleet of electric vehicles; offering the best rental and charging experience for leisure and business customers around the world.”

As you will recall, in 2011 Hertz was the first car rental company in the US to add electric cars among its options for customers and also established a wireless charging system for electric vehicles. Currently, following its bankruptcy filing, the company is taking on the challenge of being an “essential component of the modern mobility ecosystem leading electrification, shared mobility and a digital priority to customer experience.”
