The finalists for the German Future Prize 2022 are: a new radiotherapy technique for cancer patients, innovative microscope technology and an ultra-fast charging station for electric cars.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will present the award on October 26 in Berlin. The award is endowed with 250,000 euros ($249,000) and is one of the most important science prizes in Germany. In all cases, these are projects in operation, because market maturity is a prerequisite to be nominated.

Charging time is one of the great problems of electromobility, which is why a team of researchers from the federal state of Baden-Württemberg has developed a system that can charge a standard vehicle battery with a capacity of 100 kilowatt-hours in just 15 minutes.

An improved method of radiotherapy has also been proposed as a candidate, especially for lung cancer patients. Irradiation is especially difficult for these patients because the tumor is constantly moving when they breathe. The research team from Bavaria and Hamburg explained that the new technology makes it possible to accurately record the patient’s position during radiotherapy and accurately compensate for changes by tracking the radiation in the affected area.”

Finally, a new microscope technology from researchers in Thuringia offers more possibilities in cell research, which may also include cancer. It was pointed out that the system opens new perspectives for long-term observation of living cells and thus for research in biology, medicine and pharmacology.
