G7 confirms that restrictions on Russian oil will remain

The leaders, such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, among others, agreed to prohibit the import of Russian oil

The leaders of the G-7, made up of Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, promised to ban imports of Russian oil at the end of the remote summit, according to the final declaration published by the White House.

The leaders will “commit to gradually eliminate dependence on Russian energy, including by phasing out or banning the import of Russian oil,” according to the text.

“We will ensure that we do so in a timely and orderly manner, and in a way that allows time for the world to obtain alternative supplies“, the statement added.

G7 leaders will also commit to taking steps to ban or prevent the provision of key services Russia depends on. “This will reinforce Russia’s isolation in all sectors of its economy,” again, according to the text.

The meeting was also held on the eve of Russia’s May 9 military parade, marking the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany.

“Russia has violated the rules-based international order, in particular the UN Charter, conceived after World War II to save successive generations from the scourge of war,” the group says.
