Former president of UEFA arrested in Paris

Michel Platini, who already had a six-year disbarment by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, would be involved in a corruption case related to 2022 World Cup

Former UEFA president, Michel Platini, has been arrested on Tuesday in Nanterre, a French town bordering Paris, in an investigation for alleged corruption in the award of Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Platini, 63, was president of UEFA since 2007 when he replaced the recently deceased Lennart Johansson until 2016, when he was disqualified for six years for any activity related to football, a penalty that the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced to four years.

This punishment expires next October, but researchers on the award of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar have re-arrested the former French player, who was also part of the organizing committee of the ’98 World Cup and was on the executive committee of the FIFA from 2002 until he was disabled.

In addition, Claude Gueant, general secretary of Eliseo during the presidential term of Nicolas Sarkozy, who, on the contrary, has not been arrested, has also been questioned during the operation.
