First robot with AI flies into space

Cimon is the new companion of the crew of the International Space Station

The robot with artificial intelligence Cimon arrived at the end of June to the International Space Station to join the crew as laboratory assistant. The new space partner, developed by Airbus and IBM, has the ability to see, hear, understand, speak and fly through the installation.

It arrived in the Dragon capsule, together with mice for lab tests, ice cream bars and blueberries for the crew. Cimon, the Crew Interactive Mobile Companion, has a spherical shape, weighs 5 kilos and measures 32 centimeters. It will assist the astronauts in the research tasks on the Space Station.

Cimon is an intelligent astronaut, as defined by NASA, to help in routine functions, logistics, but is also expected to serve as an emotional assistant to the crew of the platform in space.

The robot with artificial intelligence can access relevant information, including photos and videos. Responsiveness is not limited to basic functions, since Cimon was designed to face questions beyond the procedures involved.

It is expected that the interaction between humans and the robot to be satisfactory. In addition, more specific functions are planned in the future, such as repair of the facilities or medical assistance for the crew.
