The alternative launched by Google is based on user login using fingerprint, facial recognition or a local PIN on their devices.

Google clarified in the publication that the two systems, the passwords and the Passkey, will be maintained together as a security measure until the access keys are definitively activated.

To activate it, you just have to open Google from your computer, click on the symbol of the account or profile picture; then the Security tab will open, in which you must click on “Access keys”. The platform will generate a verification code in order to confirm the identity of the person who is trying to activate the Passkey.

Once it has been activated, there will be no need to use the password and two-factor verification again. Simply, the user will verify their identity by unlocking the phone or computer using a fingerprint, facial recognition or a local PIN.

Apple stores and company-authorized services will “soon” include work on the FaceID sensor individually among their repair services, MacRumors has learned, citing internal documents to which it has had access.

This novelty will allow to work on the TrueDepth camera module, where both the FaceID sensor and the front camera lenses are located, which will avoid having to replace the entire phone.

These repairs will be available for phone models from iPhone XS, leaving out iPhone X from 2017, the first to introduce FaceID, according to the aforementioned media.

It would be a way to reduce electronic waste, and also a service in principle more affordable for the customer, although the prices of the repair have not been shared.

The documents consulted also indicate that the official technical personnel will be able to use the diagnostic service to determine the type of work needed: the repair of the FaceID unit, the complete replacement of this unit or the repair of the “rear system of iPhone.”

This decision is part of a “company-wide movement to limit the use of facial recognition” in its products, as stated by Meta, Facebook’s parent company, in a statement.

More than a third of the daily active users of the social network had activated the facial recognition system in their accounts, with which the social network can automatically identify them in images and videos posted by others, as well as recommendations on who to tag.

With the withdrawal of this technology, which will take place in the coming weeks, Facebook will also eliminate the metadata that allowed its operation, and that referred to more than 1,000 million users.

Users will not be able to activate the feature manually again, and the change will also affect Automatic Alternative Text (AAT), which provides textual descriptions for people with low vision, and which will continue to detail how many people appear but not their identities.

The company stated its intention to continue working on facial recognition for different uses, such as verifying the identity of users or preventing fraud and identity theft.

“The Flemish Scrollers” as Deporter’s digital art work is known, is a system that automatically tags legislators in the Parliament of Flanders in Belgium when it detects that they are using the smartphone during a meeting.

How does it work?

To achieve this, it first analyzes through an AI algorithm written in the popular Python programming language, the video of all the sessions that is broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the Parliament of Flanders.

In the event that there are no live broadcasts, previous videos of the channel are analyzed, according to its author through a statement.

The developed tool works automatically, and uses machine learning to detect mobile devices in the videos and facial recognition to identify each politician.

In the images shared on the system, a white box is shown that identifies each official with a degree of probability, and another green box with a percentage analyzes the probability that they have the mobile in their hands.

Warning

Amazon announced that it is extending the moratorium that prevents the use of the company’s facial recognition technologies for law enforcement applications, extending the previous one-year moratorium, which expires in June, to an indefinite period.

This decision comes a year after Amazon temporarily paused until June 10, 2021 the use of its facial recognition for law enforcement agencies, coinciding with the protests of the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States after the death. of the African American George Floyd.

The company decided to extend this moratorium again, although this time it has done so until further notice, according to a statement from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Amazon launched Rekognition, a ‘software’ in 2016 that, as the company details on its website, “provides high-precision facial analysis and facial search capabilities that you can use to detect, analyze and compare faces,” and among its customers are law enforcement agencies.

It is a technology that generates controversy, not only because of privacy issues, but also because of its racial bias, which makes it difficult to distinguish between people with darker skin.

Amazon urged a year ago that the United States Congress implement rules on the ethical use of facial recognition, and institutions such as the ACLU have asked the Biden Administration to completely ban the use of facial recognition technologies for police work, regardless of the company.

WhatsApp has announced the reinforcement of the security of WhatsApp Web and desktop applications with an additional layer of protection through facial recognition or fingerprints to link the users account to their computer.

These versions for computers will include new functions, as announced by WhatsApp, as they want to ensure that they have a good level of protection, just like the one used on mobile devices.

Specifically, before the user scans the QR code from their phone to link the account to WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp desktop, they will be required to unlock the application through facial recognition or fingerprint, as available for the mobile operating system.

This new measure will limit the possibility that another person can link devices to the user’s WhatsApp account without permission, as explained by the company in a statement. It is also done “in a way that preserves privacy”. That is, “WhatsApp cannot access the biometric information stored by the device’s operating system,” they say.

The new security update will be available for users with compatible devices in the coming weeks, along with a visual redesign of the WhatsApp Web page for mobile phones.
