Artificial intelligence could help understand animal language

A new AI breakthrough promises to help understand animal language in the near future. The Chinese search engine Baidu is working on this

The language processing and machine learning currently being used worldwide by AI in the human field could, in the future, be applied to animals.

The Chinese search engine Baidu is currently using “machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing to understand animals.”

Using this platform, they study the sounds of dogs and cats, to name the most common pets, to understand what they are trying to convey.

AI will allow us to understand animal language

“There are some inventions like FluentPet Connect or Shazam Band that transform the way we communicate with our four-legged friends; however, with the arrival of artificial intelligence, the Chinese search engine Baidu has filed a patent with the National Intellectual Property Administration of China that can convert animal vocalizations into language understandable to humans.”

But it’s not about “translating” barks or meows into phrases as if they were words. That’s for human language. The point is “identifying relevant signals of animal behavior—such as voices, movements, gestures, or physiological changes—to understand their emotional state and express it in natural language.”

The data would then be analyzed with the intervention of AI. Currently, Baidu uses machine learning to feed large data sets into computers, combined with deep learning through neural networks to analyze behavior. Finally, it uses “natural language processing to apply computational approaches to analysis.”

There is always human involvement throughout the entire process, as the Chinese search engine team is responsible for manually labeling “information parameters if any data does not match any emotional record.”

In this sense, Baidu explains in the patent document that the system creates “deeper emotional communication and greater understanding between animals and humans, improving the accuracy and efficiency of interspecies communication.”
