António Guterres asked to reinvent economies and create a new social contract

During the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the UN, the Secretary General highlighted the crisis facing the planet due to the coronavirus pandemic

During the opening session of the high-level debate of the UN General Assembly, Secretary General António Guterres made a comparison between the events that surrounded the creation of the organization 75 years ago and those that humanity is currently experiencing due to the coronavirus.

“Those who built the United Nations 75 years ago experienced a pandemic, a global depression, a genocide and a world war. They knew the cost of discord and the value of unity. They created a visionary response, embodied in our founding Charter, centered on people,” emphasized the official.

In this sense, he called on member countries to “reinvent economies and societies and create a new social contract.” The challenges are greater, since the world is immersed in an economic crisis where the main indicators are poverty, unemployment, absence of social protection, abandonment of the productive apparatus, business closure, among others.

Guterres has focused his speech on working together, for the welfare of all, that no one is left out, and that the necessary policies are applied to recover the economy.

The UN Secretary-General warned: “We must ensure that the developing world does not fall into financial ruin, increasing poverty and debt crises. We need a collective commitment to avoid a downward spiral,” he warned.

In addition, he referred to the need to eliminate conflicts between nations with a “global ceasefire so that the efforts of all governments and societies are focused on fighting the pandemic.”
