LG announces more resistant and flexible material to cover folding screens

The chemical laboratories unit of the Korean company disclosed its new solutions made with Real Folding Window for electronic terminals

LG has developed a new type of material, which it has called Real Folding Window, it is designed to cover folding screens but it is harder than existing solutions and will be launched in 2023.

LG Chem, LG’s chemical laboratories unit, announced on Tuesday its new solutions for new generations of electronic devices with folding screens.

The new material makes the screen “as hard as glass, while the folding parts are as flexible as plastic,” according to LG. It is a few dozen microns thick and is applied to both sides of a PET plastic film, although the company also prepares a version of the protector that can be used without the plastic film.

The new element is thinner than tempered glass, but also offers the same resistance. The South Korean company’s solution is cheaper than current flexible display technologies and guarantees durability for more than 200,000 folds.

LG has explained that, unlike most current folding screens that fold only inwards, its protective material will allow to create devices that fold inwards and outwards.

The manufacturing of the new Real Folding Window material will start in 2022 and the company expects this protector to begin full-scale sales in 2023.
