Lima Group refused results of parliamentary elections in Venezuela

Fourteen countries will call their ambassadors in Caracas and will summon the ambassadors of Venezuela in those countries to express their protest

This Monday, December 7, the member countries of the Lima Group rejected through a joint statement the parliamentary elections carried out this Sunday by the National Electoral Council (CNE) in which the ruling party obtained the absolute majority of a new National Assembly despite low voters turnout.

These elections lack legality and legitimacy

“They lack legality and legitimacy because they were carried out without the minimum guarantees of a democratic process, freedom, security and transparency, nor of integrity of the votes, participation of all political forces, nor of international observation,” says part of the release.

Likewise, the nations called on the entire international community to join in the rejection of these elections and “support the efforts for the recovery of democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law in Venezuela.”

The statement was signed by the foreign ministers of Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Saint Lucia.
