South Korean residents abroad vote in general elections

Voting for those who do not live in the country will last six days and only half of the voters abroad are expected to vote

South Koreans residing abroad began voting on Wednesday in the general elections scheduled for April 15, despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The period to vote for those who do not live in the country will last six days, in which only half of the voters abroad will be able to do it because of the current health crisis, according to information from the Yonhap news agency.

According to information from the National Electoral Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, about 86,000 voters are spread over 66 countries and regions that will be able to present their ballots until next Monday. The number of voters represents a drastic decrease as countries like Italy and the United States have suspended voting by mail due to the quarantine imposed to stop contagion.

This Wednesday, the South Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) has reported that there have been three deaths and 101 new cases of Covid-19, increasing the number of infections at 9,887.

In relation to the total of deceased, the number has risen to 16, after the last three deaths, as confirmed by the authorities.
