IATA asks for $ 200 billion in aid to airlines

“Financial support” could compensate for the lack of income in the airlines most affected by the pandemic

According to the calculations of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the airlines that have been affected by Covid-19 need emergency aid of around $ 200,000 million, which is equivalent to 185,000 million euros.

The IATA, which brings together 290 companies, especially called on the countries of Africa and the Middle East to support their companies whose difficulties threaten direct and indirect “millions of jobs.”

Furthermore, the association indicated that this aid is considered “direct financial support” to passenger and freight transport companies, which translates into 82% of world traffic to compensate for the lack of income generated by the virus.

Alexandre de Juniac, director general of IATA, indicates in a statement that halting the spread of the virus must become a priority. “They must realize that the public health emergency became a catastrophe for the economies and for aviation.”

For his part, the former president of Air France-KLM stressed that “airlines are struggling to survive. Numerous routes in Africa and the East have been suspended and demand has decreased to 60% on the routes that remain.”
