Australia launches blockchain trial for beef supply chain

A pilot program is being developed that will implement the blockchain technology for comprehensive monitoring beef exports

The Australian transport insurance company National Transport Insurance (NTI) has partnered with BeefLedger to launch an Australian platform to track meat exports.

To improve food safety, exports safety and animal welfare in Australia, the program will use distributed accounting technology along with state-of-the-art packaging technology and the Internet of Things to provide constant real-time data on performance of the supply chain.

The purpose of the alliance is to use the blockchain to create a multi-layered framework for greater security and for the credentials of the products, in order to minimize the risk of insurance.

The aforementioned cooperation will make the premium Australian cattle have credentials and be transported with location updates in real time, before being frozen and exported to China, their target market.

The partnership comes at an important time for the Australian beef industry, which is a key currency source for the country’s economy. Australia is the third largest exporter of beef in the world, behind India and Brazil.
