According to Deloitte’s 24th TMT Predictions 2025 report, the demand for energy for the use and development of Generative AI will double.
The company indicates that data centers will increase energy consumption “to reach 1,065 TWh on that date, or what is the same, 4% of current global energy consumption.”
The report analyzes the main factors that will transform companies and consumers in the Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) areas in the coming years. It highlights the challenges in the use and development of Generative AI due to its incorporation in new devices or due to the “implementation of autonomous software that performs various tasks in a practically autonomous manner (AI agents)”.
It also highlights its application in the streaming sector or telecommunications companies globally, where Generative AI will be a requirement. On the other hand, there are cloud services that will also contribute to the increase in energy consumption.
In the company’s TMT report, they have indicated: “Marking the path of Generative AI entails facing numerous challenges. With trust, inclusion and sustainability as basic pillars, we will be able to guarantee that this technological advance benefits not only this generation, but also future businesses, consumers and communities”.
