Turkey eliminates packaging advertising for tobacco

The country joins the recommendations of the World Health Organization on "simple packaging" for tobacco products in order to reduce the publicity and promotion of consumption in the population

Australia became the first country in 2012 to fully implement the simple tobacco packaging proposed by WHO in its Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. France, Ireland and the United Kingdom passed laws in this regard since May 2016. Turkey joined these regulations by adopting simple packaging for cigarettes.

The Framework Agreement of the World Health Organization for Tobacco Control (FCTC) establishes the white color for boxes of tobacco products, with clear specifications on their structure.

The law states that these products will be sold in standard, white packaging, “based on a uniform design that includes the typeface of the brand, the source and size of letter, the color of the package, the warning messages and other mandatory texts, phrases and images; the mark will be written only on one side of the package, covering no more than 5% of the side; no logo or brand symbol will be allowed on the new designs.”

Likewise, shops for sale will be controlled and advertising for tobacco consumption on television, in films, Internet sites and public social media platforms will be prohibited.

Turkey has been fighting against smoking for ten years through sustained initiatives over time. Its adherence to WHO regulations is an important fact in the fight against the global epidemic of tobacco use that catches not only adults but children and adolescents.

This public health problem is aggravated due to the direct reach of explicit advertising both in packaging and through media that sometimes escape government control. Reports from the Turkish authorities conclude that diseases attributable to tobacco use cause more than 100,000 deaths in the country each year.

That is why the Turkish Parliament took the most important step in its fight against smoking by adopting the simple packaging regulations proposed by the WHO and thus reduce the attractiveness of the product in addition to deepen sanitary measures.
