YouTube could enter the podcasts business

The YouTube website is serious about getting into the podcasts business with a new home page called youtube.com/podcasts

The web portal Podnews published a document that narrates in detail the plans that the main video platform YouTube has to venture into the podcast business and launch a new home page, a youtube.com/podcasts URL and compete with Apple Music or Spotify.

According to the information, YouTube is also thinking about the possibility of “incorporating audio ads, both those sold by Google and those of other sponsors. Revenue from these ads may be shared between the platform and the publishers of the podcasts.”

The document titled “Looking Ahead” is not the first pointer the company has given for breaking into podcasts. Last October, the platform hired an executive with experience in the area who will be in charge of directing efforts in this area. Later, in March 2022, the company offered money to some major podcast creators to record them on video and upload it to the platform.

YouTube methods for podcasts

The document describes YouTube’s plans for podcasts, as well as content monetization strategies. The company plans to offer analytics, particularly for new audio show producers just getting started with content creation on the platform.

In addition, the company is “developing a series of specific metrics and statistics for audio products, with the intention of integrating the data generated by YouTube within the standards established by the podcast industry.”

If the plans continue and YouTube decides to enable a tab dedicated to podcasts on its website, it would not be the first time that the platform has done something similar. In 2015, YouTube launched YouTube Gaming and in 2019 it authorized the Fashion & Beauty tab, and created YouTube Music, as a response to Spotify and Apple Music in terms of music streaming.
