Venezuela to add 1,300 megawatts to electrical system in the last quarter of the year

The Minister of Electric Power, Roland Alcalá, declared last week that 1,300 megawatts will be added to the electrical system, thanks to the reactivation of Unit 6 at the Planta Centro power plant, which will contribute 600 megawatts to the national grid

Venezuela is experiencing an electrical crisis that has led to service interruptions. According to the Minister of Electric Power, Rolando Alcalá, work is already underway to restore Unit 6 at Planta Centro, “an electrical generator that will contribute 600 megawatts to the national electrical system.”

On the other hand, the official indicated that seven units will be added in Zulia state, in western Venezuela, contributing more than 500 megawatts to the region, along with other units nationwide that together represent 1,300 megawatts in the last three months of the year.

The goal is “to achieve greater stability, continuity, and fewer interruptions in the electricity service for all users.”

In a video released on social media, accompanied by the president of the National Electric Corporation (Corpoelec), Juan Fernández, he noted that “in parallel and as a complement to the thermal generation plan,” significant transmission infrastructure projects are underway in the country, including the expansion of the Planta Centro substation.

To this end, a new 400.230 kV autotransformer has been installed, with operations scheduled to begin in November. This will allow for “optimal energy evacuation from the Planta Centro and Termocarabobo complex to the rest of the region.”

Work is underway at the Portuguesa substation, which will allow for optimal power flow to that state, as well as to Barinas and the Andean region.

Fernández highlighted the implementation of “a plan for the use of alternative energies, such as the Machango solar park, which is currently in the procurement phase for commissioning at the beginning of next year.”
