SpaceX will be in charge of destroying the International Space Station
Once its functions end, the International Space Station will be destroyed by SpaceX, Elon Musk's company, selected by NASA for the job
Once the functions of the International Space Station (ISS) end, approximately in 2030, the SpaceX company will be in charge of its destruction by NASA, through an agreement of approximately 843 million dollars.
The United States space agency confirmed that Elon Musk’s company will build the “vehicle that will be responsible for deorbiting the International Space Station once it reaches the end of its useful life.”
The station’s retirement has been planned by NASA and the space agencies of Europe, Canada, Japan and Russia. The date has changed. However, it is known that the “retirement” process of the ISS will begin between 2026 and 2028 with the progressive withdrawal of personnel.
“Starting in January 2030, the process to empty the International Space Station will begin. First, the equipment that is part of the orbiting laboratory will be removed, while between June and November the last crew will be removed. NASA has established a line at 280 kilometers altitude as the point of no return for the ISS. This means that once you cross it, your final destination will be sealed.”
