On March 8, the world remembers the struggles and demands of women
International Women's Day is an opportune date for a review of the demands achieved by women and the challenges they still face
March 8 was declared International Women’s Day by the United Nations (UN) in 1975; however, the General Assembly of the organization adopted it in 1977. Long before, women were recognized for their contribution to the economy, education and development at a global level.
In the 21st century, challenges remain in aspects such as labor and gender equality, access to education and health, among others.
The UN, together with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and entities from each country, are striving to identify the needs and rights of women in order to design mechanisms that guarantee decent work, equal participation in the economy, representation in areas such as science and innovation, as well as dignified treatment, as well as their inclusion in decision-making.
Recognition of women’s contributions is progressing slowly, despite their increasing role in trade, finance, government positions and sports, to mention some key sectors in the process of globalization.
