In a blog post, Microsoft announced the discontinuation of Windows activation by phone. Activation will now be done online through the new product activation portal.
According to the company, this measure is part of the activation model for permanent licenses, which aims to strengthen security and reliability, as well as “prevent potential fraud.”
This means that the automated phone activation process has been eliminated in favor of a new activation portal, which also offers offline capabilities.
According to the press release, “the product activation portal is compatible with both connected and unconnected devices and offers a modern, optimized interface for all users.”
Katharine Holdsworth, Microsoft Partner Group Product Manager, told The Verge that users do not need an internet connection on the computer where they want to activate the product license, but accessing the online portal does require another connected device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or another PC.
