Mexico will host a presidential summit on migration on October 22

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, confirmed this Monday the Presidential Summit on Migration on October 22 in Chiapas, with 11 Latin American countries invited

On October 22, the Presidential Summit on Migration will take place in Chiapas, Mexico, to which the leaders and foreign ministers of Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, Haiti, Cuba, Costa Rica and Panama.

The confirmation of the event was made this Monday by the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who indicated that the representatives of the 11 nations will discuss the delicate issue of migration in the region.

AMLO noted during his morning press conference: “I am inviting you to meet in Palenque, Chiapas. “I am inviting the presidents of Ecuador, Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, the prime minister of Belize, Guatemala, Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba, Costa Rica and Panama.”

Currently, the issue of migration is on the table in countries such as Venezuela, the United States, Guatemala, Panama, among others, either because their own nationals are leaving the country or because it represents the escape route to other territories.

The flow of migrants through the Darien jungle towards the United States, or through Nicaragua and Panama, has generated concern in all governments involved.

“We are going to try, among ourselves, to [establish] a good neighborly agreement against poverty, for the well-being of our people so that we can address the problem of migration. What is happening with migrants hurts us a lot,” said the president of Mexico.

Migrants are victims of assaults, sexual assaults, robbery. They even die in accidents during transportation. This is a reality that will be analyzed at the summit on October 22 by the countries from which families leave every day in search of a better life.
