Mexican digital peso launch date unclear

The Central Bank is working on the legal, administrative and technological requirements for the digital peso

The Central Bank of Mexico, better known as Banxico, is still working on the launch of its own digital currency, which is now estimated not to be ready by 2024.

The information from the local media ensures that the institution is working on the legal, administrative and technological requirements to be able to fully prepare the digital version of the Mexican peso.

The local government announced in 2021 its plan to introduce a national digital currency, noting in a Twitter post that “new technologies and next-generation payments infrastructure” would enhance Mexico’s financial inclusion and projecting the launch for 2024. One year later, the authorities would have avoided forecasting a release date.

The interest in the bitcoin cryptocurrency in Mexico generated a significant number of measures around this sector, such as the installation of an ATM of this type in the Senate.
