IDB and Japan join forces in favor of Latin America and the Caribbean

They confirmed the commitment to cooperate in the social and economic recovery of nations

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) as well as the Government of Japan join efforts of cooperation and brotherhood to contribute to the social and economic recovery of Latin America and the Caribbean.

With a promise of alliance, both parties committed to establish new agreements for the benefit of Latin American and Caribbean countries. In the presence of the Ministry of Finance of Japan (MOF) and a new Memorandum of Collaboration (MOC) with the International Cooperation Agency of Japan (JICA), they agreed to provide prosperous solutions in different fields.

Mauricio Claver-Carone, IDB president, assured his dedication to “strengthen our alliance with the Government of Japan. These new agreements give the IDB more flexibility in the use of Japan’s resources at a time of critical need for the region.”

Carone added: “Expanding co-financing for quality infrastructure, disaster risk reduction and global health coverage will be crucial to help the region recover and prosper after COVID-19 and Hurricanes Eta and Iota, as well as our expanded alliance with the Japan International Cooperation Agency.”

This amendment, signed by the President of the IDB, Claver-Carone, and the Minister of State of Finance of Japan, Kenji Nakanishi, specifies the expansion of the Japan Quality Infrastructure Initiative (JQI), established under the umbrella of JSF in 2016, to include a focus on resilience to natural disasters and universal health coverage.
