UK will fight pedophilia on the Internet with AI

The Interior Ministry announced a plan that aims to find people who commit crimes of pedophilia in places like the Dark Web

The UK Ministry of Interior presented a plan to combat pedophilia on the Internet through the use of Artificial Intelligence tools to analyze audio and video content to detect pedophiles more quickly.

The new project announced will count on a financing of 30 million pounds, and its objective is to “equip law enforcement with new pioneer technologies and capabilities to find more pedophiles operating online and protect children who have suffered abuse,” such and as reported by the British Interior Ministry in a statement.

Statistics from the National Crime Agency of the United Kingdom show that during the past year 2.88 million accounts were registered on Dark Web sites known for hosting harmful content and pedophiles, and at least 5% of them come from the United Kingdom.

To address this threat, the Ministry of Interior will invest in its database of images of child abuse (CAID), a resource created in 2014 that includes 14 million images used by government agencies to reduce the time needed to identify the contents pedophiles and their victims.

With the new 30 million pound funds, the United Kingdom “will explore the incorporation of improved Artificial Intelligence tools into the system, including voice analytics and age estimates,” as recorded by the Ministry of Interior.

This project will use existing forensic tools used by the United Kingdom since the summer, which use image categorization algorithms and scene comparison technology.
