In an unprecedented turn, Huawei announced the replacement of the Android operating system on its devices from 2025 with HarmonyOS Next, a native technology.
The change will be released in the brand’s new phone, the Mate 70 as a strategy to move away from American technology.
According to the announcement made at a live event on Tuesday, November 26, “the new devices boost Huawei’s campaign to recover the Chinese high-end against Apple Inc. and build an ecosystem without the participation of the main American technology providers.”
The new phone hits the market on December 4 with its Pro variants. HarmonyOS Next is expected to take two to three months to improve the user experience. However, the company has indicated that it will be incorporated into upcoming devices as soon as possible.
It is known that other Chinese technology companies “are also exploring ways to reduce their dependence on foreign technology. Xiaomi Corp. is preparing a mobile processor of its own design for its upcoming smartphones in an effort to reduce dependence on Qualcomm and MediaTek.”
