Haitian president dies after attack on his home

Jovenel Moise was attacked early this Wednesday at his residence in Port-au-Prince, where the first lady was also injured

The president of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, was assassinated in an attack perpetrated at dawn on Wednesday against his private residence and in which the first lady was also shot.

The attack occurred when “a group of unidentified individuals“, including “several who spoke Spanish”, attacked the house, according to the statement collected by local media such as Juno7 and Gazette Haiti.

Joseph has condemned this “heinous, inhuman and barbarous” action and has called to the population “to the calm”. “The security situation in the country is under the control of the National Police and the Armed Forces,” said Acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph, who is confident that “democracy and the Republic will overcome” this escalation of tensions.

The leader called for calm to the population and assured that both the police and the army are in charge of maintaining order.
