The technology company Google confirmed this Thursday, September 5, the construction in Uruguay of the second large data center through an investment of $850 million. It will be built in the Science Park, located in Canelones.
In this way, Google expands its presence in Latin America. It is timely to remember that the first large data center is located in Chile.
“Construction of the data center will be divided into four phases and will last 26 months, employing between 300 and 400 workers, with a temporary increase to 800. Once completed, the plant will create around 50 permanent jobs,” they have indicated from the company.
The new large data center will be focused on strengthening the technology company’s key services and products, “including Google Search, YouTube, Maps and Google Workspace, which encompasses applications such as Gmail, Docs and Sheets.”
The facility will become part of the company’s extensive global network, which currently includes 28 data centers around the world. Likewise, the expansion will reach the “Google Cloud infrastructure, which covers 40 regions dedicated to cloud services.”
With the construction of this data center, Uruguay advances in the digital race, as highlighted by the country’s chancellor, Omar Paganini, in addition to underlining “the hard work and support of various Uruguayan ministries, underlining the importance of the country being open to projects of cutting-edge technology companies.”
Uruguay will be a great center for innovation, leveraged by the legal security that the nation provides.
According to Eduardo López, president of Google Cloud for Latin America, the company is making a “sustained commitment to the region, highlighting Uruguay’s strengths in terms of reliable infrastructure and training of local talent.” He estimates that the new project will improve connectivity in Uruguay and will generate a positive impact on the local community.
