Everything points to a change of course and strategy marked by mobility and sustainability, taking into account that the Chinese company BYD, in full expansion, leads the electric vehicle market.

The company was founded in 1995 (Shenzhen, China) and quickly rose in the market, to the point of recently surpassing the American Tesla, run by Elon Musk.

It entered the European market in 2022 and now has 230 sales establishments in 19 countries, in addition to expansion plans.

Apparently, the philosophy of the new sponsor fit into the new orientation of the organizers of Euro 2024, who want a more sustainable tournament. In this sense, the official fleet of the tournament will be made up of electric vehicles by BYD, with the goal of reducing the carbon footprint and contributing to sustainability. BYD, for its part, has announced events that promote electric mobility in the fan zones of the host cities.

Prominence of foreign sponsorship

According to UEFA, there are five commercial partners in the sponsorship of the sporting event most anticipated by fans. The organization indicated that the Adidas brand will deliver the balls and equipment for volunteers and employees. Likewise, the French digital services company Atos will be in charge of the tournament’s computer technology. Coca-Cola accompanies them in the supply of all supplies for the hydration of the fans, the volunteers and the dehydration officials. The German railway company Deutsche Bahn is in charge of Euro-Tickets at special prices.

Boost to the German economy could be 1,000 million euros

The host country of Euro 2024 could add around 1 billion euros to its economy from the profits derived from foreign tourists who travel to enjoy soccer matches.

The forecast of the economic research institute, ifo, indicates that the figure would correspond to 0.1 % of economic production in the second quarter of the year. The sectors with the greatest benefit from the sporting event are hospitality and food retail in Germany.

Ceferin made his determination public during a press conference following the Congress in Paris, revealing that he had made this resolution about six months ago and had shared it with his family and some friends.

The broad majority of Congress supported the amendment of the statutes of the European federation, which previously limited the maximum number of terms of office for the president to three.

Also, at the meeting held in Paris, the UEFA Congress approved the election of Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, CEO of Atlético de Madrid, and Nasser Al-Khelaïfï, President of PSG, as members of the Executive Committee. Both will represent the European Club Association (ECA) for a term of four years.

Al-Khelaifi, who has been president of the ECA since April 2021, was already part of the Executive Board representing the clubs, while the German Karl-Heinze Rummenigge will step down to be replaced by Miguel Ángel Gil.

In addition, at the 48th UEFA Congress, the inclusion of Pedro Proença, president of the European Leagues, as a member of the Executive was confirmed. Proença was elected to this position on 30 November 2023.

This new League of Nations was approved this Wednesday by the Executive Committee of the organization and comes after “an extensive work carried out by a working group of national team competitions made up of representatives of different national associations and following a recommendation by the Football Committee UEFA Women’s.”

“The renewed format is interconnected, dynamic and meritocratic, and aims to create a more competitive environment with greater sporting and commercial interest, while guaranteeing the opportunity for all national federations to qualify for the European Championship and the World Cup,” highlighted UEFA.

This new competition will be launched next year, in the period before the qualifying phase for Euro 2025 begins. Thus, starting in the fall of 2023, this new competition system will connect a League of Nations with the European Qualifiers in search of continuing to increase the growth and competitiveness of women’s football.

The new format will resemble that of the men’s Nation’s League, with the teams divided into three leagues, where each will play in groups of four or three on a round-robin basis. The former will play in finals that will determine the champion and, in addition, as a great novelty, every four years which three European teams qualify for the Olympic Games. Also, there will be promotions and descents.

The qualifying phase for the European Championship or the World Cup will determine the teams that draw a direct ticket for these two events and those that can qualify through the ‘play-offs’. In addition, it will determine which league they will start in the next competition cycle.

The president of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin, expressed his satisfaction with this new League of Nations, which demonstrates his promise that they would continue “investing in women’s football”. “Following a historic European Championship for England, now is the time to further develop women’s national team football,” he said.

“We have built an open, competitive and continuous system where every game will matter, a true reflection of the European sporting model. I am convinced that this format will help all European national associations and keep the dream of qualifying for a major international tournament alive”, sentenced the Slovenian.

This proposal, indicated in a press release by the RFEF, “has the unconditional support of UEFA in a global project that transforms European football in an exceptional situation.” “Luis Rubiales and Fernando Gomes, top leaders of the RFEF and the FPF, understand that there is nothing better than a World Cup to strongly transmit a message that will serve as a source of inspiration in the future,” he added.

The candidacy has “the full support” of Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA, and is intended to “build bridges and project a message of unity, solidarity and generosity on the part of all European football.” “The candidacy strengthens ties with Europe, generating hope and providing reconstruction tools to the Ukrainian people, who have expressed their pride and gratitude for participating in this project,” he stressed.

The Coordinating Commission of the 2030 World Cup, led by Antonio Laranjo, is already working with the participation of Ukraine, which will soon incorporate the members of its delegation. The Ukrainian arrival does not alter the established roadmap, since Spain maintains its eleven venues and Portugal will continue with three.

“The candidacy of Spain, Portugal and Ukraine has the approval of both the Government and the Head of State, and will meet all the deadlines for delivery according to the FIFA order book. We trust that the football family embrace and support this initiative,” declared the RFEF.
