For Sergio Saggese, Executive Director of Technology, Processes, and Information Security at Bancamiga, digital transformation is a change in business models and a necessity to compete in today’s markets. However, the accelerated pace of digital transformation has broadened the scope of exposure to cyberattacks. These attacks are perpetrated in a highly sophisticated manner, primarily aimed at blocking critical operations to demand ransoms, using techniques that employ Artificial Intelligence to emulate voices or legitimate banking platforms.

During the conference “Managing the Digital Age: Cybersecurity Implications for Businesses,” delivered this Wednesday to students at Monteávila University, Saggese stated that attacks occur daily and companies must protect themselves. It is essential to understand that there are threats and what those threats are.

“Cybercrime takes advantage of human error, whether by action or omission, misconfigurations, and vulnerable code. There are targeted attacks that utilize third-party connections and interconnected devices, which serve as entry points to internal networks. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link,” he indicated.

He expressed that digital transformation is inevitable to offer agile, personalized, and competitive services that are securely structured from the design stage on four pillars: cloud adoption, AI, the Internet of Things, and data analytics.

For Bancamiga’s CEO, Sergio Saggese, the question today isn’t “whether we will be attacked,” but rather “how quickly will we detect, respond to, and recover from an attempted attack?”

To protect an organization, it’s necessary to shift from a reactive approach to a proactive and defensive stance. The starting point should be “never trust, always verify.” Every access request, whether from inside or outside the network, must be constantly authenticated, authorized, and validated. Continuous training for employees and partners, with content tailored to the customer experience, is also key. It’s essential to strengthen monitoring capabilities and prepare for the moment of an attack.

Saggese maintained that there must be a comprehensive and holistic process for managing cybersecurity, and this is where the focus on cyber resilience —an organization’s ability to anticipate, resist, confront, and recover from adverse cyberattacks— becomes crucial.

“It’s about strengthening the company’s capacity to resist and respond. Cybersecurity isn’t just about resisting, but about navigating the storm.”

The conference attendees, mostly first-year engineering students, expressed their gratitude with words and applause for the concepts presented by Saggese, recognizing their contribution to their holistic development.

The company made this announcement through its main portal, where it explained that it will support research focused on determining contamination levels of cryptocurrencies, renewable energies, and energy generation processes.

As is well known, there are various investigations with antagonistic positions on the impact of Bitcoin mining on the environment. A study called “Bitcoin Net Zero” concluded that bitcoin “does not represent any kind of threat to the ecosystem and that the electricity consumption of its network is very low compared to other sectors.”

For its part, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that “disturbing” results have been produced in the levels of contamination produced by Bitcoin mining.

Pillars of research

Bitmain in its announcement explained the 4 pillars on which it structures the investigations. The first refers to the need to verify the real levels of contamination from bitcoin mining, which could be achieved by analyzing, identifying and measuring the carbon footprint produced by the industry.

The second investigation will focus on “how Bitcoin is promoting the use of renewable energy for mining” in order to meet the goal of “100 % green mining with zero emissions” that the Bitmain company is proposing.

The third pillar will be based on “how bitcoin is optimizing energy generation processes” or smart energy. This study aims to analyze the efforts that governments and private organizations have been making in the development of innovative electricity generation technologies for Bitcoin mining and the advantages that the sector is imparting to the activity.

Finally, the company plans to carry out a sustainability study, which will focus on “how companies in the Bitcoin field have committed to achieving the goal of Zero Emissions promoted by the United Nations Organization (UN) for the year 2050”.

This decision follows a study commissioned by Brussels that showed that investment in open source software generates a return four times higher. The initiative seeks that these software improve the digital processes of companies and public services and in this way the Commission helps the technological transition that it wants to promote in Europe.

The Community Executive will make its software available to citizens in open source in a single repository to facilitate access and reuse. Before switching to open source, each piece of software will be scrutinized for security, confidentiality, or intellectual property violations.

Open source software impacts security

The Commission services will thus be able to publish the source code of the software they use in less time and with less paperwork, something that has been applauded by the Budget Commissioner, Johannes Hahn, who has pointed out that this type of software has “great advantages” and has indicated that this is a field in which the EU can play a leading role.

“The new rules increase transparency and help the Commission, as well as citizens and companies in Europe, to benefit from the development of open software,” said the Austrian commissioner.

In this sense, he has defended that pooling efforts to improve the software also brings mutual benefit since Brussels will have access to improvements made by other developers. “This can also improve security, as external and independent specialists check the software for bugs and security flaws,” Hahn said.
