Over the past year, OpenSea has listed various Blockchains, including BNB Smart Chain (BSC), after seeing the enthusiasm of the broad NFT ecosystem. However, in line with the evolution of the sector, the company has chosen to focus resources on more promising areas, determining that the costs associated with maintaining support for BSC outweigh its impact, as indicated by OpenSea in its statement.

OpenSea’s recent decision reduces the total number of supported Blockchains to 10, including Arbitrum, Avalanche, BNB, Solana, Ethereum, Klaytn, Optimism, Polygon, Base, and Zora.

As of this moment, it will not be possible to create new listings or place offers on BSC NFTs, although the display, exploration and transfer of these assets on the OpenSea site will continue to be feasible, the platform assured. This measure is presented as a way to direct resources towards rapid innovation in the cryptoecosystem, according to statements by OpenSea.

It is worth mentioning that the BNB Smart Chain, previously known as Binance Smart Chain, is a first layer Blockchain derived from the renowned Binance cryptocurrency exchange.

In addition, OpenSea reported that despite withdrawing support for BSC, the company remains optimistic of a multi-chain future. Additionally, the platform recently enabled support for the Ethereum L2, BuildOnBase, and ourZORA networks.

At the beginning of the year, the company recognized that, after reviewing the comments of its users, more than 80% of the nft stored for free on the platform were plagiarized, counterfeit or spam creations or artistic works. As a result, the marketplace now seeks to shield itself from these fakes, as explained on its blog.

To this end, OpenSea announced the implementation of new measures that act on two different areas. One of them is updating the user account verification and badge collection system to expand the number of creators who are eligible to be verified. Another is the creation of an automated system to help prevent, identify and remove so-called copymints, copies of genuine NFTs.

Before updating the account verification process and badge collection system, OpenSea explains that its community has previously called it “opaque” as well as “slow and cumbersome.”

To begin with, the marketplace changed its system that, from now on, will send invitations to accounts with more than 100 ethers of collection volume to be eligible to be verified. Cybercrime is no stranger to this trend and an NFT collector, Jeff Nicholas, suffered the theft of his entire portfolio of NFT files, valued at 150 units of the cryptocurrency ethereum, about $ 450,000.

Cybercriminals contacted Nicholas when he wrote to a fictitious version of the Discord channel on the NFT OpenSea platform, using common social engineering techniques to impersonate the company’s technical support and help him fix a rights issue.

The attackers convinced Nicholas to share his screen with them, and they used this information to scan the QR code that served as a key to his digital wallet and transfer all the NFT files it contained to another.

However, due to the functioning of the blockchain wallets, OpenSea was able to find the wallet that the criminals sent the NFTs to, although other people had already bought them without knowing that they were stolen.

The files were recovered thanks to the action of Nicholas and Sohrob Farudi, another NFT collector who on his Twitter account claims to have lost more than $ 800,000 in another social engineering scam, also on Discord and Opensea.

To prevent future similar attacks, OpenSea added an SOS button with which NFT wallet owners can lock them when they lose control of them, while the MetaMask digital wallet has disabled QR codes as keys for security.
