Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge reported that the figure will be adjusted annually for inflation, and the Canadian government reserves the right to review the terms if Google reaches more favorable agreements for media in other countries. .

This agreement arises as a result of the implementation of the Online News Act in Canada, which requires Google and Meta to compensate media for the dissemination of their content on digital platforms.

Despite having been approved in August, the law has not been implemented due to ongoing negotiations between the Canadian government and the technology giants. Both Google and Meta (the parent company of Facebook and Instagram) have expressed their opposition by blocking access to news in Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau highlighted that this agreement reflects Canada’s commitment to local journalism and to independent journalists who must be compensated for their work. Trudeau also criticized Meta for refusing to compensate the media, accusing the American company of completely abdicating its responsibility to democratic institutions.

Under the agreement, Google will be responsible for determining how it will negotiate with the media about the distribution of funds, in addition to committing to continue offering training programs and digital resources to Canadian information companies.

Media publishers will have one more option on the social network in May to individually monetize their articles, as reported by the CEO and owner of Twitter, Elon Musk.

With this novelty, users interested in an article will be able to pay to access it “with a single click“, as the tycoon has highlighted. “This allows users who would not sign up for a monthly subscription to pay a higher price per article when they want to read an occasional article,” he explains on his profile on the social network.

Musk sees this as a win-win feature for both publishers and the public. His defenders point out in the same news thread that it allows payment on demand for those items that you want to see, and may even be cheaper than paying a monthly payment.

The detractors of these ‘micropayments’, on the other hand, warn of the possible proliferation of headlines known as ‘click bait’, those designed to attract attention and tempt visitors to click on a link, to see a paywall it could deter some users or that it could benefit the big media more than the smaller ones.

On the other hand, Musk did not detail how this payment system per article would materialize, nor has he anticipated whether he will charge a fee for the mediation of Twitter in said transaction.

A similar idea is also present in Post, one of the social networks that postulate as an alternative to Twitter. Its founder and CEO of Post, Noam Bardin, introduced this platform in November 2022, highlighting his intention to offer access to journalistic content from “premium” publishers by paying only for the articles that are read, thus avoiding subscriptions and ads.

This is stated by the Internet User Security Office (OSI) and the cybersecurity company Panda, who registered cases of this campaign through the impersonation of various online newspapers such as El País, ABC and El Mundo.

Scammers send emails under the name of one of those newspapers, which include fake testimonials from famous people and online reputations to report “great investment opportunities in the crypto market.”

Cybercriminals take advantage of the fact that many users subscribe to various digital media outlets and regularly read their newsletters to facilitate deception. In this way, they use emails that appear to be legitimate and come from a known address.

As Panda explains through a statement, scammers use cryptocurrencies as a hook, since more and more people are looking to invest in this digital asset. In this case, the tactic used for the phishing attack starts with sending emails from well-known newspapers with links to fake news.

The exchange described the investment as strategic and explained that the company will execute its investment through the “assumption of subscription agreements that represent 200 million dollars of commitments in private investment of 400 million in public capital (PIPE), maintaining the PIPE of Forbes also in 400 million, proceeding according to the same terms as the other investors.

Changpeng Zhao, CEO and Founder of Binance, noted: “As Web 3 and blockchain technologies advance and the crypto market comes of age, we know that media is an essential element in generating widespread consumer understanding and education.”

Digital transformation

Forbes, through a statement, explained that they were looking for a negotiation that would allow them to project their company to the New York Stock Exchange with the symbol FRBS, in order to continue promoting the company in its digital transformation with periodic and quality income. In addition, they indicated that they planned to complete the project by the end of the first quarter of this year, for which Binance’s investment has been fundamental in its execution.

“We look forward to reinforcing Forbes’ digital initiatives as they evolve into a next-level investment information platform,” said Zhao.

The deal also allowed Binance to hold some positions on the Forbes board of directors. This is how Patrick Hillmann, director of communications and Bill Chin, director of Binance Labs, will join as members of the Forbes board of directors.

According to information provided by the company, more writers and journalists are now adapting their work to email newsletter models and prefer the editorial freedom inherent to the medium, which also allows them to move away from company-dependent advertising business models that are in constant decline.

In this sense, the new Facebook platform, “would allow writers to monetize through subscriptions and will be integrated with Facebook pages,” said the company, adding that “writers will be able to create groups to interact with their community of readers.”

Notably, the world’s largest social network pledged in February to invest at least $ 1 billion in the news industry over the next three years, following a high-profile confrontation with the Australian government over the payment of content to the media.

The implementation of this regulatory framework, the first of its kind, comes just a week after Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, blocked the news in the oceanic country.

The law says that the media should receive a “fair remuneration for the content they generate, which will help keep journalism in the public interest of Australia”, said Treasury Minister Josh Frydenberg.

The Journalistic Content Payments Act was developed following investigations by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) into the imbalance in advertising revenue between technology companies and the media in Australia.

The new legislation obliges technology companies to negotiate with the media a compensation for journalistic content published on their platforms.
