The US security agency has issued an alert in this regard, referring to such digital tools as a possible weapon against users.

Usually, people turn to PDF to Word or JPG file converters. Among the recommendations to people who need to use these programs is not to use the first one they find on the Internet, but rather to prefer, for example, the Premium version of Adobe Acrobat.

In this way, according to the FBI, it is possible to avoid the activation of malware that cybercriminals hide in apparently defenseless versions of online converters.

By processing files in this way, viruses are loaded onto computers, causing cases of ransomware. But it is not the only way to attack users; The FBI also indicates that they can do this through tools to download videos or convert MP4 to MP3.

In that case, converters can return the document with JavaScript code that exploits a vulnerability or also installs commands on the device.

In the process of sending a file to convert and receive the one the client wants, digital criminals also keep the client’s information, since they can scrutinize the content and find an email address, address, phone number or, worse still, banking information, passwords, photos.

In short, everything that normally goes on a CV for a job. Hence, the FBI’s warning to carefully select the digital tools used to convert files, download or share information.

Unfortunately for many victims, there is potential for an even worse outcome. ESET, a leading company in proactive threat detection, warns, alerts, about advertisements that offer cryptocurrency recovery services, but instead of recovering the funds, all they do is steal the supposed commission that they will charge for the false management.

This type of “recovery fraud” or crypto scam is becoming more common, and even the FBI published a Public Service Announcement (PSA) about it last year, in which research indicates that almost a third (30%) of Identity theft victims have been scammed at least once.

Recovery scams are often a type of advance payment fraud, meaning the scammer will demand payment for the service they claim to provide, and once the transfer is made they disappear without doing the work. They may also request access to cryptocurrency accounts or personal and financial information, to sell the information on the dark web and be used in other scams.

“Recovery scammers are all over social media. They can proactively search for people who have just been victims of cryptocurrency theft/fraud and are venting online, and send them direct messages. Or they can work from a list of crypto victims they have obtained on some hacking forum. They can even create legitimate-looking asset recovery “companies” with official websites and advertise in paid search engine results,” says Phil Muncaster of ESET.

The sophistication of these scammers can vary. Some post basic messages on social media, others may call victims directly by phone, posing as police or judicial officials and pretending they have stolen money to return. In other cases, scammers may leave long comments on cybersecurity forums that, at best, are a mix of testimonial and advertising, promoting their services.

Some cryptocurrency recovery scammers advertise their products through low-cost, online press release distribution services. They create a fictitious press release about the recovery of stolen assets, containing links to the scam website, and then upload it to a network of subscribed media outlets for distribution.

About this type of deception of crypto victims

ESET shares some signs of scams to look out for and avoid cryptocurrency theft:

They ask for an upfront commission before starting their “job,” or another fee (for example, taxes) before they can process returns.

They may communicate with a web-based email (e.g. Gmail/Yahoo) instead of a corporate account.

They ask for banking, cryptocurrency account and/or personal information to “return” the funds.

They claim to work closely with law enforcement or government officials.

They make contact out of the blue, whether through text messages, email, or social media.

They do not offer any phone number to contact.

The person you contact appears to know many details about the particular case, possibly including how much was stolen and how they did it.

If you have suffered the loss of cryptocurrencies due to fraud or theft, ESET’s recommendations are:

Gather as much evidence as possible.

Report the incident to the police and/or relevant regulatory body.

Contact legitimate attorneys who offer recovery services, researching their business beforehand.

Consider the possibility of contacting the exchange house where the scammer collected (the crypto), if you have the information.

“Once cryptocurrency has been stolen from you, it is extremely difficult to get it back. Although blockchain-based currencies can be monitored, some are set up to protect the anonymity of users, so the scammer cannot be unmasked. The decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies means that even if you could find out where they went, it would be extremely difficult to recover your funds. Sometimes the best thing you can do is avoid becoming a victim twice. Online scammers are predatory and lurking everywhere. Don’t let them take your money,” concludes the ESET researcher.

The virus, which was originally used to steal Ukrainian military data, is now being used by hackers to grab cryptocurrency.

According to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) alert, “Infamous Chisel is a collection of components that allow persistent access to an infected Android device through the Tor network and periodically collects and filters information of the victims of the compromised devices.”

They have also warned that the malware has the ability to “recover, copy, and transfer data sets connected to directories of specific applications on an infected device.”

This means that cybercriminals gain access to social networks, messaging applications and crypto wallets, particularly from Trust and Coinbase. The consequences are the theft of user data, access to email and, finally, to their accounts in digital currencies.

Among the capabilities of Infamous Chisel, very difficult to detect on Android devices due to the lack of tracking systems, there is also monitoring of “network behavior and collecting information about information traffic, as well as scanning and transferring SCP files, in addition to access Secure Shell”.

The FBI has indicated that the seized assets come particularly from cases of violation of federal laws, where “most of the seizures were made in Ethereum (ETH), a figure that amounts to an estimated $ 800,000 seized in said digital currency.”

In a procedure carried out in Virginia, the FBI managed to recover the highest amount in said digital currency, which amounts to $ 473,811. This is also the highest number seized “in a single proceeding”.

Regarding other cryptocurrencies, the agency detailed that they seized $ 147,000 in Bitcoin (BTC) funds, another $ 20,000 in Monero (XMR), “as well as some $ 469,000 in the DAI stablecoin. There were also about eight cases where Tether (USDT) funds were seized, as well as others with altcoins such as Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA), and even a very small amount in Dogecoin (DOGE) token.”

Through the report, it is described that these procedures were carried out not only in funds housed in specialized hardware for the storage of cryptocurrencies, but that “the majority of the seizures were made to the accounts in exchanges that operate locally”.

The Juice Jacking technique is a type of cyberattack known for using a charging port as a connection that, in addition to charging the device’s battery, allows data exchange. Thus, once the smartphone is connected, by allowing the transfer of data, the malicious actor can infect the terminal by implementing malware or carrying out other actions such as stealing sensitive data.

In other words, with this method, cybercriminals can take advantage of the fact that users connect their device to public charging stations to manipulate said stations and gain access to the device in multiple ways, either by introducing viruses or monitoring software.

This has been denounced by the FBI in Denver (United States) through a recent publication on Twitter, where it advises avoiding the use of these free charging stations in public places such as airports, hotels or shopping centers.

In the same way, the FBI recommended that users, instead of these stations, use their own charger and USB cable and try to connect it to a regular plug or outlet. In the same way, users can also choose to use a portable battery for mobile devices that they can turn to anytime and anywhere.

The credentials of the networks of universities and higher institutes in the country, which have the ending “.edu”, appeared in dark web markets and in forums, for sale or publicly, as the agency notified the affected academic entities.

As he explains in a briefing document, the credential listings come from various cybersecurity incidents, the first of which was identified by the FBI in late 2020 on the dark web, and was made up of approximately 2,000 unique usernames and their respective passwords.

In May 2021, the agency re-identified more than 36,000 email and password combinations on an instant messaging platform, and in January of this year, in forums of Russian origin, access credentials to the networks of “crowd” of centers of higher education in the country, some with screenshots as proof.

From the FBI, they warn that the exposure of usernames and their passwords can encourage brute force attacks, which consist of trying to recover a key by trying all possible combinations on other platforms on which the victim is registered. If cybercriminals are successful, in addition to compromising the user’s account, they can steal personal and sensitive data.

Determining the reliability of the message was extremely difficult because they were sent, according to the Spamhaus report they were issued from the “LEEP website (Law Enforcemente Enterprislos e Portal), a secure platform for law enforcement agencies and intelligence groups.”

The content of the email is false, but its origin comes from one of the servers of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States, using the IPs and login information that are normally used to issue official information.

Large-scale attacks

The hackers used legitimate email addresses that were taken from the database of a non-profit organization called the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN).

Spamhaus considers this message to be small evidence of a large-scale attack targeting “Vinny Troia, the founder of the dark web intelligence company Shadowbyte” and said it is not the first time that it has received such threats.

For its part, the FBI issued a statement confirming the fact, but assures that it does not have more information on the subject and urges users to report any activity they consider suspicious.

Part of the communication states: “The FBI and CISA are aware of the incident involving fake emails from an @ ic.fbi.gov account. This situation is still valid and we are not in a position to provide additional information at this time. We encourage the public to be wary of unknown issuers and to urgently report any activity to www.ic3.gov or www.cisa.gov”.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation of the United States (FBI) is helping South African authorities in the investigation of the company Mirror Trading International (MTI), which could be considered the largest cryptocurrency scam of 2020.

The FBI is collaborating with the liquidators of the South African company, in order to protect the interests of several investors from the United States, and some local ones.

According to the media, MTI went into liquidation at the end of June 2021 and South African financial officials labeled it a Ponzi scam, in addition to being seen as the largest crypto scam of 2020.

“We had meetings with international law enforcement agencies, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, after being contacted by them. The FBI is joining forces with the liquidators of Mirror Trading International in the interest of several local and American investors”, says part of a statement from the company.

South Africa Plans to Regulate Cryptocurrencies to Promote “Responsible Innovation”. The Intergovernmental Fintech Working Group (IFWG) published a position paper on crypto assets that sets out a framework for how the government would regulate assets in the future in South Africa. By the way, in that country there is great interest in crypto investment, according to a report.
